Her heart is voluptuous, it has a tongue and a pout, dense fur, a huge lake of blood, a dazzle of lash and white fur, where he floats and dreams borne on lust. (page 56)

Synopsis: When Elise Perez meets Jamey Hyde on a desolate winter afternoon, fate implodes, and neither of their lives will ever be the same. Although they are next-door neighbors in New Haven, they come from different worlds. Elise grew up in a housing project without a father and didn’t graduate from high school.
Jamey is a junior at Yale, heir to a private investment bank fortune and beholden to high family expectations. The attraction is instant, and what starts out as sexual obsession turns into something greater, stranger, and impossible to ignore.
The unlikely couple moves to Manhattan in hopes of forging an adult life together, but Jamey’s family intervenes in desperation, and the consequences of staying together are suddenly severe. And when a night out with old friends takes a shocking turn, Jamey and Elise find themselves fighting not just for their love but also for their lives.

Main Characters:

Elise- I honestly thought her name was Elsie 50% of the book. Kind of wish it was Elsie. I appreciate Elise, she’s brave, and herself. She’s proud, and doesn’t let anyone think she’s trash. She says/does what she wants, when she wants and doesn’t apologize or give a damn about what anyone’s reaction. She stands up for herself and what she believes in. She’s loud and speaks her mind; where most people would remain silent. She fights, she’s righteous, and she is a powerful badass woman.

Jamey- The oh-so-lovely, Jameyyyyy. honestly had no notes on how I felt about him so winging it like my eyeliner here…He felt like he couldn’t ever love, and it scared him. Once he met Elise, everything changed that. I didn’t know someone could be so compassionate, and love so deeply. He’s awfully humble for having a couple million dollar trust fund. He has a heart of pure GOLD.

-The characters personalities develop so well it makes you scream. Facial features & expressions but no physical appearance description until (page 129) where you finally find out Elise is white. {Not exactly the type of description I was wanting but it’s something. I expected eye color, hair description.} something They are so full of life but are failing faces throughout most of the novel.

Overall Opinion:
This book was my step-out-into-a new world book. Something I wouldn’t typically reach for. Once a month I decide to pick a random book I know nothing about, and probably wouldn’t choose when I buy books. With that being said…

The first 40 pages were slow, and I really didn’t want to read it. I have a difficult time reading books that are set back in time, and I don’t know why. Because I was moving out of my comfort zone I wanted to get the full experience of this book and refused to DNF it. I pushed through.

The information was well researched and thought out. I’mLIVING for the book cover.

They often just layed together, asking questions, entirely sweet and innocent. They fall purely in the moment. The analogies are crazy weird but pretty great; “the house is rejecting her like a body refuses a transplant organ.”

Perks for adding realism and actually adding hygiene into the story. Along with authenticity of things such as periods. (page 66) These were incorporated into their lives as they would be for us.

It was so good and I fully awaited an amazing ending as well. Although I was shocked at the near ending, it gave me a heart A-TTACK. The last page was a whopping disappointment. It was the worst page in the entire book. I cannot even deal with this. I am left devastated, scatter brained and shook. This novel was dark and twisted. It was like a freakin’ thriller but NOT A THRILLER and my bookish mind is imploding.

Jamey and Elise had so many hardships and all you could do was hope for the best. Their relationship is very raw and reckless, but it’s so damn bold you can’t help to fall in love right along with them.  They had a very intimate relationship where a lot of couples lack intimacy. Although there were so many external conflicts going on in their lives they always came together at the end of the night and it’s something I admire about them. Being set back in the late 1980’s it covered all of the important things that our society today is still going through; power, being broke as one can be, school dropout, mixed race, and privileged rights. They come from two very different worlds but they both have the same mentality and it works out for them because of that.

Quotes: SO MANY GOOD ONES!!!!
▪ “Jamey steps behind Elise, wraps his arms round her waist. What if, he’s thinking for the first time. She leans back, easing weight against him. And he feels it as her saying, yes exactly.” (page 65)
▪ “Her face painted by the stars. The light sanctifying each curve and lash. He thinks about how bodies are made from time and space: meteors and blood, lava and brain, plankton and bones. (page 61)
▪ “The small of her neck when they come together, something feral and otherworldly, salt and roses, life and death.” (page 53)
▪ “So much of life is standing on the curb, willing to see what rolls up.” (page 54)
▪ “A lot of bone and fury and nothing else. She’s dry metal, the giant of mica ringing in your ear.” (page 56)

Staying? Suit yourself. They’re intense ones.

He proposed with a FREAKIN’ GUMBALL RING!!!! That is as goals as it gets, let me just tell you. #HellaRomantic

I ached for them both so much after Jamey was drugged. WHAT THE ACTUAL HELL?? His friends are a-hole’s…

Leaving Buck behind broke my heart, I was so sad. I understand but it’s also enraging at the same time. How could she? -But she had to. Why would she? -But she was left without a choice.

  1. O-K-A-Y-YYYYYY So, this is one of THE PRETTIEST covers I have seen all month!!!!!!!!! 😍😍😍😍😍😍 I mean I love it to the point that you could’ve claimed the book to be more pathetic than Fifty Shades I’d stilll have read it!! 😂😂😂 Can’t begin to tell you how many ABSOLUTELY trash things I’ve boight JUST BECAUSE THEY ARE PRETTY!

And, you know, I prefer Elsie too. Elise just….I don’t know! 😉😁

But you are practically drowning in your love for the book that I JUST HAVE TO READ IT NOW.. 😁☺☺☺

    ❤❤

    1. I KNOW RIGHT oml the only reason I chose it was because of the cover. I tbh had no interest the first time I read the synopsis but the cover kept calling me 😂😂 (That sounds ridiculous but it’s true)

I’m so glad it ended up not being trash because now I can PROUDLY flaunt that cover around 😂😍

I tend to get carried away in my reviews. Some people call them “passionate” but who knows. Haha.

Thanks, if you read it I definitely want to see your review!!!

      ❤❤❤
      Much Love,
